The Marginals Tietê and Pinheiros highways have received high-definition cameras to support strategic operations on São Paulo’s most critical avenues.

Mission

The Marginals Tietê and Pinheiros are São Paulo’s two most important expressways, totaling 47 km in length. Together, they handle over 500,000 vehicles daily and are not only sites of accidents but also protests and various crimes. Policing these highways and maintaining public order is the responsibility of the Military Police of the State of São Paulo (PMESP), which prioritizes strategic, intelligence-driven, and preventive operations. This analytical approach led the police to expand and modernize their monitoring system along these routes.

Solution

A surveillance system was integrated, featuring 82 AXIS Q60-E network cameras from Axis Communications, managed by Genetec’s video monitoring software—a partnership with Axis. The high-definition images provide detailed and comprehensive coverage of events on both highways, 24/7. At the command center, operators can select individuals or objects and enable auto-tracking to follow their movements.

Result

The success on the Marginals prompted the Military Police to test the AXIS Q6045-E mk II camera, integrated with the AXIS Q6000-E accessory, at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) entrance—a major landmark on Avenida Paulista. This solution, which allows zooming in on details without losing the broader long-range view, was deemed a valuable tool to support São Paulo’s strategic efforts in combating crime. As a result, 20 units of the AXIS Q6000-E were acquired. São Paulo became the first city in South America to implement this large-scale concept of simultaneous visualization using AXIS Q6000-E cameras.
