Capturing high-quality images has always been the primary goal of a video monitoring system, as without this feature, the system is unlikely to identify events deemed important in your project requirements.
The problem is that the equipment purchased does not always contain all the necessary features to fulfill the project's objectives, and it is for this reason that we define in this article one of the most important functionalities as a differentiator for capturing most of these events: image stabilization.
Image Stabilization
Similar to a camera's zoom, which we define in the following article, image stabilization is a feature that can be found in either mechanical or digital forms.
Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) is a feature found in cameras that have a gyroscope in their hardware responsible for detecting and stabilizing captured movements. This type of feature, although more expensive, improves image accuracy by mechanically reducing noise, thus allowing for more stable capture even in environments with vibrations and wind. Its greatest advantage is stabilization without loss of resolution, as this process occurs at the moment of image capture.
On the other hand, Electronic or Digital Image Stabilization (EIS) uses software, usually embedded in the camera, that processes the captured images to remove noise and blur, allowing for improved visibility.
Although this feature may require processing power, there are CCTV market devices with good specifications capable of performing this function automatically while recognizing natural movement patterns.
This feature is popular in IP cameras because, in addition to improving capture performance, it allows the equipment to forgo specific hardware, consequently reducing its cost.
Integrated Stabilization Features
Additionally, it is possible to find IP cameras that contain both mechanical and digital stabilization features; this type of camera can produce images with minimal loss due to movement or vibration.
The Q35 line from the manufacturer Axis is a good piece of equipment with image stabilization, as it integrates its gyroscope sensor with software that helps achieve the best capture accuracy.
For Which Projects is This Feature Recommended?
The image stabilization feature, whether digital or analog, is recommended for projects involving external events that may influence camera movement and vibration, such as:
- Outdoor environments with high wind and storm conditions;
- Installation in vehicles;
- Installation on aquatic platforms;
- Environments with high foot or vehicle traffic;
- Tall poles;
- Mining sites, dams, hydroelectric plants, etc.
