What is an API and what is it for?

In the technology market, there are various competent solutions to solve everyday problems; these solutions can be physical, like hardware, or digital, like software.

However, many companies focus all their efforts on building a perfect solution that meets a certain type of demand, but it will not always meet all the needs of their consumers.

To address this, the technology market has developed interfaces that connect solutions from different departments and companies to achieve results quickly and customizably. One of these interfaces is the API.

API or Application Programming Interface is a programming interface that allows a company to define internal resources that interact with external resources through communication between standards and protocols.

Nowadays, there are various solutions that use APIs as a means of communication between resources; for example, many online stores use payment APIs with financial companies. This communication is almost imperceptible to the end user.

Can CCTV and access control projects use APIs?

Now that we know what an API is, it is important to emphasize that the use of this resource depends on the needs of a project and that both sides of the API communication must provide their resources. In other words, for a CCTV or access control project to use an external API, it is necessary for the company that has external resources to make its API available to third parties.

Thus, it is easy to point out that projects like these can indeed use an API, but not all companies make their resources available.

What can be done in an access control project with an API?

It is possible to create numerous fully integrated solutions through the API resource. For example, a company can install turnstiles and cameras from different brands and integrate them into a unified software to facilitate access control and monitor visitors during their stay on-site.

Among the various possibilities available with the use of APIs, access control demands can be one of the most rewarded with the use of this resource. But for this, it is necessary to use a controller capable of ensuring communication between the devices.

Fortunately, Axis Communications has a solution for this.

Axis Communications

Axis Communications is a Swedish company founded in 1984. It was a pioneer in providing IP video surveillance solutions, launching the world's first network camera in 1996.

Since its founding, Axis has been improving and innovating its products and technologies. Each launch presents a unique set of features from the manufacturer, making its solutions stand out from the rest.

Today, it is present in over 50 countries, providing the best equipment for the CCTV market, including Brazil.

API, Access Control, and Axis A1001

The Axis A1001 is an access controller manufactured by Axis Communications and has a fully open API, as seen in the controller's own datasheet: “This allows the unit to be easily integrated with other systems, such as video surveillance, intrusion detection, and attendance.”

This controller combines quality and capability in a single solution, allowing management of up to 50,000 credentials, viewing event logs by hour or topics, configuring alarm actions through triggers, and much more.

Its architecture, developed to allow integrations via API, enables numerous interactions with third-party software, and this is because Axis Communications collaborates with developer communities that are always bringing the latest solutions to the market.

The Axis A1001 is powered via PoE and can also power locks, readers, and auxiliary equipment. This makes its installation and maintenance faster and more efficient, as the number of necessary cables is limited. It is also compatible with direct integration with wireless locks and elevator controls.

Access Control and Fire Control

Now that we know the Axis A1001 access controller and how its API interface works, we can exemplify an access control project where it was possible to integrate the access controller with turnstiles at a reception and also integrate the turnstiles with a fire alarm system.

The architecture of the controller allowed the use of the API to program an event to unlock the turnstiles in case the fire alarm system is triggered. Thus, two completely different systems were integrated via the access controller and its API, which enabled the development of software to manage the triggers and unlock the turnstile.
